How to Repair a Porcelain Bathtub Scratch

How to Repair a Porcelain Bathtub Scratch. A bathtub is a significant part of your bathroom, and if it has a scratch or blemish, it detracts from the look of the entire room. Bathtubs can be refinished entirely to look brand new, but there is no need to do this if your bathtub has only a small scratch.

Here's how to repair a scratch on a porcelain bathtub.

  1. Determine if the scratch is small enough to be repaired. If you have many large scratches and/or chips, you may want to get the bathtub completely re-enameled. This can be expensive but will bring the bathtub back to looking new.

  2. Find a porcelain repair kit in the color of your bathtub. These kits are available at almost any hardware store and can be found in many colors. If you can't find an exact match, get a color that is the next shade lighter. A darker color will be more noticable.

  3. Prepare the scratched area of the porcelain bathtub by cleaning and drying it. Wiping it with rubbing alcohol after cleaning it will ensure there is no dirt or dust in the scratch.

  4. Apply the porcelain paint by following the directions on the repair kit. You should apply a small amount of the paint and allow it to dry completely before applying another coat. It may take several coats before the scratch is gone.

Tip

Keep in mind that repairing a porcelain bathtub scratch will not be a perfect solution. The area will look different and results will not be perfect.
