Orchard Orioles, a common type of oriole, reside in eastern North America. They aren't black and orange like many other orioles, but you easily can identify these birds by following these steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Note the habitat of the Orchard Oriole. This oriole lives in the eastern half of North America, as far north as parts of southern Canada and as far west as parts of Colorado. Look for it in suburbs, woodlands, orchards and near groves of trees.

  2. Step 2

Review the appearance of the Orchard Oriole. The male Orchard Oriole has a black head and back and chestnut underparts. He also has a black, square-shaped tail and a black back. His wings are pointed and black with a white stripe, and the wing feathers have white edges. In addition, Orchard Orioles have chestnut colored patches on their shoulders. Female Orchard Orioles have a yellow head and underparts and an olive-colored back. They have two white stripes on their wings.

  3. Step 3

Observe the size of the Orchard Oriole, which is usually between 6 and 8 inches long. They weigh around .7 of an ounce, and carry a wingspan between 9 and 10 inches. The Orchard Oriole is the smallest of the common orioles.

  4. Step 4

Listen to the song and call of the Orchard Oriole. The call sounds similar to "chuck" and is very sharp, and the song of the Orchard Oriole is loud and made up of various whistles that down slur at the end of the song.

  5. Step 5

View the flight pattern of the Orchard Oriole. Like other orioles, they show rapid wing beats during flight, and they are fast and direct fliers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not confuse the Orchard Oriole with the Baltimore Oriole. Orchard Orioles are smaller in size than Baltimore Orioles, and Orchard Orioles do not have the characteristic orange and black coloring of Baltimore Orioles.
