Whether you are looking to buy your first banjo or to replace an older banjo, there are certain guidelines you must follow. If you don't, you are liable to wind up with an instrument that sounds like a cigar box with rubber bands attached. Regardless of what brand you buy, look for a banjo that gives off the clear bell-like sound that is the trademark banjo sound.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Determine what kind of music you wish to play on your banjo. Choose an open-backed style if you are playing claw-hammer style. A resonator or Mastertone-style banjo works best for bluegrass music.
Step2
Check the basic parts of the banjo. Your banjo should have a bell bronze-tone ring, a resonator, a resonator flange and a wooden rim. One or two coordinator rods should connect the neck with the rim.
Step3
Buy your banjo in a music store, if possible. While you can purchase an instrument online, it is best to actually play the insturment before purchasing.
Step4
Choose a music store that has several brands available. Take a friend who also plays banjo with you.
Step5
Play the banjo. Take it through its full range of notes. While you test the banjos, have your friend listen. Then have him play the instrument, and you listen. Position yourself in front of the banjo to hear the best tone.
Step6
Make sure the banjo you choose is well constructed. Check that the neck doesn't have any excessive warp to it or a back bow. The banjo should feel comfortable in your hands.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't allow a sales person to pressure you into buying something you're not sure is right for you.
