Bears may be exciting to see at a distance, but they can quickly become a concern when they come too close to campgrounds. Understanding bear behavior and taking precautions to keep them out of your campground is a good idea when you camp near their habitats.

From Quick Guide: Tenting on the Old Camp Ground
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose an open campsite away from natural feeding areas, such as heavy timber areas, berry patches, other dense vegetation.

  2. Step 2

Check the campsite carefully before setting up for the night. Clean up any garbage or food items left by previous campers and set up your campground far from previous campers' cooking areas.

  3. Step 3

Set up your cooking and eating area at least 100 yards from the area where you will sleep.

  4. Step 4

Make sure your campground has a "bear pole" that is a minimum of 10 feet above the ground and 4 feet out from another post or tree. All food and garbage should be placed in a secure container and suspended from the pole.

  5. Step 5

Avoid carrying or cooking foods and beverages with a strong odor. Bears can detect orders from far away.

  6. Step 6

Keep your camping area clean. Wash your dishes immediately and dispose of dish water downwind, at least 100 feet from your sleeping area.

  7. Step 7

Don't cook or store food in your tent. Never leave food or beverages unattended and don't store them under water. Bears will still be able to pick up the scent. Change your clothes before you go to bed, and never sleep in the same clothes that you cooked in.

  8. Step 8

Deposit human waste at least 200 yards from the camping area.
