How to Get Fencing Lessons

For those people who appreciate and want to experience history, or just really like old Errol Flynn movies, fencing may have always been something you wanted to do. As adults, jumping around with pretend swords doesn't always go over so well with others. Star Wars lightsabers aside, maybe its time to get serious and get fencing lessons. Enjoy a challenging and sophisticated sport and learn to defend yourself with a sword.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a fencing academy or school near you. Ask about lessons at local gyms, recreation centers and YMCAs. Check online also to find places to get fencing lessons in your area (e.g., "Chicago Fencing Club").

  2. Step 2

Find fencing classes at some local colleges and universities. Take traditional fitness courses or continuing education courses that teach fencing.

  3. Step 3

Register for a beginner's course if you're just learning or if you need a refresher class. Determine costs including courses and equipment as well as yearly fees.

  4. Step 4

Buy court fencing shoes or other appropriate shoes, such as running or court shoes. Dress appropriately in socks, fencing pants or sweat pants and a T-shirt.

  5. Step 5

Know that certain basic equipment is required to get fencing lessons, such as a mask, jacket, glove, plastron and a practice weapon. However, some schools provide this equipment for beginning fencing students.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are interested in a low cost fencing experience, then try joining local fencing clubs. They usually will provide you with equipment and lessons for a small annual fee under $100.

on 1/21/2009 Do not wear jeans, many have figured out that despite how comfortable they are you will generally be reprimanded and if you can learn the basics before going to classes you save a lot of money, private classes (like the ones they offer if you have no experience before you do group lessons) are generally somewhat basic and around 100 dollars per-half-hour (at least that is the standard at F.A.W. where I used to go a long time ago).
