Replacing the hard drive on your Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop computer doesn't require the help of a professional. You can do it yourself with these steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • New hard drive
  • Screw driver, small Phillips
  1. Step 1

Call a Dell computers representative to order the correct hard drive for your Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop. You should receive the hard drive in about 3 to 5 business days.

  2. Step 2

Look at the bottom of your laptop. There are two screws with the letter H next to them. This is where the hard drive is located. Unscrew these screws to expose your laptop hard drive.

  3. Step 3

Pull the unusable hard drive out. Always smash your hard drive before putting it into the trash to ensure that any sensitive information cannot be retrieved.

  4. Step 4

Take the new hard drive and slip it into the appropriate slot. Place the cover on and put the screws back in place.

  5. Step 5

Install all software including your OS system for your computer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep all software CDs in one CD case holder. You can type all product key codes onto an address label. Stick them to the outside of the CD so that you always have that information available when installing.
  • Make sure you touch something metal before working on any computer to release static, which can destroy hard drives.
