How to Pass the Life and Health Insurance Exam

Every state in the United States requires that you pass the Life and Health Insurance Exam before you are able to begin selling Life and Health Insurance products. These exams are taken on a computer and the results are given to you before you leave the examination center.

Things You'll Need:

  • Study guides and materials
  1. Step 1

    Know the composition of the Life and Health Insurance Exam. This exam consists of 150 questions and has a time limit of two hours and thirty minutes.

  2. Step 2

    Identify the topics contained in the Life Insurance section. These topics are: life insurance basics, policy provisions, life insurance policy options and riders, life insurance tax considerations, qualified life insurance and annuity plans, annuity policy information and annuity policy tax considerations and implications.

  3. Step 3

    Recognize the topics contained in the Health Insurance section. The Health Insurance section covers the following topics: health insurance basics, individual health, group and dental insurance policies and provisions, disability income, medical plans, special needs individual insurance, HMO's and tax considerations for health insurance.

  4. Step 4

    Become familiar with insurance regulations. Study general insurance rules and regulations as you will be tested on these subjects for this exam.

  5. Step 5

    Check with your state regulators. Life and health insurance rules, regulations and laws may vary from state to state. Check with your state's regulations before taking the exam.

Tips & Warnings
  • Purchase study guides and materials in order to help guide you through the vast amounts of information on life and health insurance products.
  • Consider taking pre-licensed training before sitting for this exam. Doing so will go further to ensure that you will pass this exam on your first attempt.
  • If you fail this test three times, you must wait at least 30 days before you may retest.
