Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paint
  • Picture frames in one shape or color
  • Storage for magazines and books
  • Storage for throw blankets and pillows
  • Solid colored curtains
  1. Step 1

Choose a paint color. Go to a home improvement store and browse the neutral toned paints. These colors are best because it is easier to find ones that match your existing furniture.

  2. Step 2

Remove everything from the walls and tables. Choose only your most favorite paintings, photos and prints to adorn you walls.

  3. Step 3

Designate one area for personal photos. When photos are spread haphazardly throughout the room they create a cluttered look. Clutter is the antithesis of contemporary design.

  4. Step 4

Buy matching picture frames either in color or shape. Matching picture frames create a uniform, clean look.

  5. Step 5

Choose simple window dressings. Solid colors are best but if you must have print, choose a large, simple print.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are matching the color of your picture frames, save money by purchasing inexpensive wood frames and paint them all the same color with spray paint.
  • Make sure your throw pillows match. They don't have to be the same color, but make sure the colors complement each other and the wall color.
  • Convert your personal photos to black and white. Having all of your personal photos in black and white will enhance the streamlined effect of the room.
  • Don't forget storage. Whether for throw blankets and pillows or magazines and books, be sure to buy something to store them in. Consider repurposing a photo box for magazines and books or an old steamer trunk for blankets.
