You've tried patching it. You've tried gluing it. But your favorite wooden chair still has a split in it. Don't give up. Whether your chair is an antique or a relatively new model, just follow these simple steps to repair a split chair seat. In no time at all, you'll be enjoying your favorite chair once again.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Regular and angled pliers
  • Masking tape
  • Wooden paint stir stick
  • Wood chisel
  • Joiner
  • Wood glue
  • Bar clamps
  • Clean, dry cloth
  1. Step 1

Take out all visible screws in the chair seat. Make note of possible missing screws.

  2. Step 2

Pop out any wooden "buttons" that may be hiding other screws. To prevent damage to the wooden chair, wrap masking tape around your pliers.

  3. Step 3

Remove any nails used to "fix" the split chair seat. Use your angled pliers to remove the nails. Use the wooden stir stick to prevent further damage to the chair's finish and to provide some leverage.

  4. Step 4

Use the wood chisel to gently remove any old glue from the chair frame. Also, gently chisel and remove loose pieces of wood where the chair seat splits.

  5. Step 5

Place pieces of wood back together again. In all likelihood, the pieces has gaps in them. Use the joiner to smooth the rough edges. Be careful not to shave too much wood off the crack, or the pieces can't go back together properly in the frame.

  6. Step 6

Apply wood glue to both edges of the seat. Join the pieces together. Clamp them together with bar clamps. Use a soft cloth to wipe off any excess glue on the seat. Let the glue dry overnight.

  7. Step 7

Re-assemble your chair. Replace any missing screws. You chair is now as good as new.
