Snowboarding is an exhilarating winter sport that's been around since the 1960s. Think of it as skateboarding or surfing on the snow. Using an epoxy-fiberglass snowboard, the key is to ride your board down a slope while maintaining your balance. Easier said than done. Experienced snowboarders can compete in alpine, freestyle and boardcross competitions. Follow these steps to prepare for your snowboard run.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Snowboard
  • Snowboard boots
  • Bindings
  • Helmet
  • Ski jacket
  • Snowboarding pants
  • Goggles or sunglasses
  1. Step 1

Gear up for your snowboard run. The most important are a snowboard and bindings. Don't forget protective gear like helmets and goggles. Prepare to stay warm and dry with clothing made for the snow. Look into boots made specially to keep you on a snowboard.

  2. Step 2

Familiarize yourself with your board. You need to know how to fix the bindings to secure you the snowboard. Make certain you use the safety leash on any type of hill. It doesn't take much for a snowboard to start sliding away from you.

  3. Step 3

Practice the different techniques and maneuvers used on a ride. You're not going to shift your weight from foot to foot like skiing. Rather you shift from heels to toes on each end of the board. Some of the most commonly used moves are gliding, skating, switch edges, sideslipping and traversing. When you know these moves, put them together to prepare to link turns.

  4. Step 4

Know how to stop. Perhaps the most important move of all is to know how to stop the ride. Push your heels down to dig the edge of your board into the snow. Some people prefer to use their toes, but this takes a little more balance.

  5. Step 5

Bundle up and apply sunscreen. Remember that sunburn is common on the ski slopes.

  6. Step 6

Locate a beginner's hill, also called a bunny hill. Go to the top of the hill.

  7. Step 7

Strap yourself in with the bindings. Place your foot in the front binding. Make certain heel is secure and attach the ankle strap. Next, fix the toe strap snug on your foot. And prepare for the ride of your life.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many ski resorts offer snowboarding lessons.
  • When carrying your board, watch for other people. Snowboards can deliver a good wallop.
