Instructions
  1. Step 1

Follow rules of good health and relaxation to gain the most from Aikido. The philosophy talks about a central energy within us called "ki." Ki is a source of power centered in the solar plexus, just beneath the belly button.

  2. Step 2

Find your center both mentally and physically. A relaxed posture focuses on your ki. Once you become centered, you have more energy and grace in your movements. Mentally, you are calm and possess acute senses. This strong ki is also known as having "hara."

  3. Step 3

Understand that Aikido is a series of holds and throws. These movements utilize the total body in a circular motion around a center force.

  4. Step 4

Learn a little physics, because the effectiveness of Aikido is due to physics concepts of matter and energy. Aikido uses movements that both move close to and separate from a center to unbalance or redirect an attacker.

  5. Step 5

Practice Aikido often. This is not a martial art that can be mastered in months. It takes time and dedication to master the fundamentals of movement, timing and breathing. Most practice is with a partner. One person functions as the uke or attacker, while the other is the nage or receiver. Partners practice both roles.

  6. Step 6

Work to the best of your ability. Many training styles are used in Aikido. Physical strength is not a component of training, which makes Aikido ideal for people of all ages. Yet Aikido practice results in increased flexibility and muscle development.

  7. Step 7

Get the most out of Aikido by practicing the philosophy of remaining centered at all times, both physically and mentally. The ultimate goal of Aikido is harmony with the universe.
