Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hiking boots
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Small flashlight with replacement batteries and bulb
  • Map and compass
  • Whistle or sight mirror
  • First aid kit
  • Water purification tablets
  • Food and water
  • Cell phone
  1. Step 1

Understand springtime weather in the Grand Canyon. The spring can be one of the best times to hike in the Grand Canyon, but there are still things to be aware of. Be prepared for sudden weather changes during your hike. Also, late April and May can be windy on the South Rim.

  2. Step 2

Get up-to-date weather conditions for the Grand Canyon at nps.gov (see link in Resources), the National Park Service website.

  3. Step 3

Be in proper physical shape to hike the Grand Canyon in the spring. Hiking the Grand Canyon can be difficult. Trails are long and steep, and this can be too much for some hikers. The dry climate and sometimes warm springtime temperatures can also affect your hiking ability.

  4. Step 4

Bring everything listed in the "Things You Will Need" section of this article. The items are also listed on the National Park Service website. Wear sunscreen, a hat, broken-in hiking boots and sunglasses while hiking in the Grand Canyon.

  5. Step 5

Know and choose the appropriate hiking trail in the Grand Canyon. There are trails on the South Rim, the North Rim and in the inner canyon for day hikes and overnight hikes. Trails and facilities in the South Rim are open during the spring, while facilities and trails don't open until mid-May in the North Rim. Listings of the trails, the Accessibility Guide, trail advisories, weather alerts, openings, conditions and warnings are on the website.

  6. Step 6

Reserve any campsites or other lodging that you may need before arriving at the Grand Canyon for your hike. If you attempt an overnight hike, visit the website for the National Park Service for information on reserving accommodations. Reservations are highly recommended.

  7. Step 7

Map out how to arrive at the Grand Canyon and where to park your car before your hike. Some roadways may be closed during the spring months, so plan ahead and avoid these roads
