-
Step 1
Make sure that you are healthy and in good enough physical shape to hike the Grand Canyon in the fall months because it can be strenuous and difficult. Trails are long and steep, and this can be too much for some hikers. If you have any concerns about your safety in hiking the Grand Canyon, speak with your personal physician beforehand.
-
Step 2
Bring all items that you will need on your hike. These items are listed in the "Things You Will Need" section of this article and on the website of the National Park Service. Wear sunscreen, a hat, comfortable hiking boots with thick socks and sunglasses.
-
Step 3
Choose the appropriate hiking trail in the Grand Canyon for you and your group. There are trails on the South Rim, the North Rim and in the inner canyon. Some of these trails can be for day or for overnight hikes. Trails and facilities in the South Rim are open during the fall, while facilities and trails close in early October in the North Rim.
-
Step 4
Understand the fall weather in the Grand Canyon. The fall weather on both the North and South Rims can be unpredictable. Be prepared for sudden changes of weather during your hike and know that it may snow in October in some parts of the Grand Canyon.
-
Step 5
Reserve any campsites or other lodging that you may need before arriving at the Grand Canyon for your hike. If you will be doing an overnight hike, make arrangements with the park before your arrival.
-
Step 6
Map out how to arrive at the Grand Canyon and where to park your car. Know that some roads, especially those in the North Rim, may be closed during the fall, so don't plan to use these routes.
-
Step 7
Have a plan for where you're going in the Grand Canyon and how to get there safely. Find road closure information or other road conditions on the website for the National Park Service.
