Step 1
Determine if you are a candidate for lip augmentation. Be in great health, both physically and mentally. A doctor who performs lip augmentations must examine your lips, skin and medical history. Certain medical problems can cause you to be turned down for lip augmentation, such as oral herpes, lupus, dental abscesses, clotting problems and other active diseases.
-
Step 2
Decide exactly what kind of results you want. Your decision affects the type of lip augmentation procedure needed. Know what you want before heading to the doctor; he can tell you your options. Different procedures produce different results. Injectable fillers can last from 9 weeks up to a few years, depending on the type of filler used. Synthetic implants are permanent (unless removed) and give a defined look. Injectable micro-implants are permanent implants.
-
Step 3
Know the risks and complications of the procedure you want. As with any kind of surgery or augmentation, there are risks and complications possible with lip augmentation. Ask your doctor about possible complications. Problems with implants can include infections or irritation, but they can be removed and later replaced to remedy the problem. Permanent injectables can cause irritation, infection, granuloma formation and other complications. These are not easily removed and can cause many problems. Carefully weigh the risks with your doctor before choosing a procedure.

Step 4
Find out the cost of the lip augmentation procedure you would like to receive. Costs can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on the type of procedure, the doctor and any complications. Medical insurance companies don't normally cover these types of procedures, but medical financing companies are available.
