How to Wallpaper Over a Cover Plate

Most often, a cover plate for a light switch or electrical outlet is an eyesore. Whether you've decided to make a change to match the existing décor in a room or to simply add a decorative touch, wallpapering over a cover plate is an easy way to change the look of these unsightly necessities.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Wallpaper scrap
• Wallpaper paste
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Screwdriver
• Masking tape
• Cover plate

1. Turn off the electricity before removing any cover plate. Next, use a screwdriver and remove the cover plate.

2. Take a piece of scrap wallpaper that matches the already existing wallpaper on the wall, or, if the room is painted, choose a pattern of your liking. Make sure it is about 2 inches larger than the cover plate. If trying to line up a pattern, place the scrap piece over the opening where it will go on the wall to check for alignment.

3. Place the cover plate on the back side of the wallpaper scrap. Trace the openings for the outlets with a pencil and score with scissors in the middle, making an "X."

4. Tape the overlapping edges of the wallpaper with masking tape to the back of the cover plate and also the switch hole flaps. This will ensure better reinforcement.

5. Apply the cover plate back to its position on the wall.
