French knots can be tricky to make and they often turn out uneven. However, colonial knots are easy. You can use the colonial knot instead of a French knot, and it will always come out the same. Follow these steps to make Colonial knots.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Come up through the fabric with the tip of the needle where you intend to stitch the knot. Keep the fabric taut in an embroidery hoop or with your hand.

  2. Step 2

Create a loop by wrapping the thread counter-clockwise around the needle. The thread should arch over your needle.

  3. Step 3

Take the thread and wrap it again over the tip of the needle to create a second loop. The lay of the thread should resemble a figure 8.

  4. Step 4

Push the needle down through the fabric just a bit over from where you came up. Putting the needle in exactly where you came up will pull the thread out of the fabric.

  5. Step 5

Pull the needle down through the fabric. Keep needle the thread taut until you have pulled all the excess thread through. You now have a finished colonial knot stitch.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice making colonial knots on a spare piece of fabric before you try them on a stitching project.
