Things You'll Need:
- Keyless electric drill
-
Step 1
Judge the size of the screw head. If you can't do this, purchase both the 3/16" and the 5/32" clutch bit. Insert the bit into the screw to make certain that it fits. Select the bit that works for the job.
-
Step 2
Hold the drill in your left hand if you are right handed, and reverse if you are left handed. Insert the chuck key, that "L" shaped piece of metal with the cog on the end, with the cog into the opening.
-
Step 3
Turn the key until you see the chuck opening. It will look like a cone at the end which separates to 4 pieces. This creates the opening for your new drill bit
-
Step 4
Insert the drill bit into the opening with the flat end in first. The bit end should remain pointed outward.
-
Step 5
Twist the chuck key in the opposite direction to clasp the bit firmly in the opening.
-
Step 6
Grasp the bit with your hand and wiggle it. If there is any wiggle, tighten it until there is none. You are now ready to remove that screw.
-
Step 1
Judge the size of the clutch head screw. Most of them are 3/16" or 5/32". You may want to buy both to save some time. Try both bits in the screw head, to find which suits the job.
-
Step 2
Grasp the drill in one hand and the exterior of the chuck in the other. Twist to the right.
-
Step 3
Watch for the chuck to open. The cone will separate into 4 distinct parts. Once this happens, continue until you can insert the bit.
-
Step 4
Twist the outside to the left to tighten. Give an extra twist to make certain that the bit is in tight. You are now ready to begin your project.
