Brush up on your skills and knowledge. The Columbia River Gorge is no place for beginners to cut their windsurfing teeth. In fact, even relatively skilled windsurfers should take a short course or primer on windsurfing in the gorge in order to learn about the strange winds, the currents and local law.

2
Find out about local regulations. Before you get in the water you need to know about the rules and regulations related to windsurfing in the gorge. Obstructing shipping traffic in the gorge, for example, can result in a $5,000 fine. Also, you need to keep an eye out for sheriff's boats, which often perform rescues in the water, requiring you to keep a minimum of 500 feet of distance from the officer's boat.

3
Think about where you want to access the river from. There are a number of different access points to the river. Unlike other windsurfing spots, the difference of only a few miles can mean huge differences in the wind, water and atmospheric conditions. Think about if you want to get to the river from the Washington or Oregon site and then speak with the locals to find areas that are most appropriate to your windsurfing skills.

4
Plan your trip. There's almost no sense in windsurfing the Columbia River Gorge for just a day or two. Given the amount of time it takes to get used to the river, the diversity of spots to windsurf and the long trip required for most people to get to the river, it's best if you stay a few days and get the full experience. You can camp alongside the river or find local lodgings at different price levels right all around the gorge.
