1
Determine where you are. The tow truck service provider will need to know your exact location in order to respond to your emergency. Check for street signs or other indicators.
-
2
Call your service provider. If you have roadside assistance through AAA or through your insurance carrier, call that number and explain your situation. You will need to give your name and account number, or social security number perhaps, to verify your identity.
-
-
3
Verify for the tow truck service what kind of car you have, where you are with relation to the street or curb, the nature of the emergency and if you have a ride to get you home.
-
4
Stay with your vehicle while the tow truck is en route. You may have to wait an hour or longer, depending on the time of day and the distance you are from the nearest towing service.
-
5
Go with the driver--or follow the truck in a separate vehicle--to make sure of your vehicle's safe arrival at the garage where you will have your car attended to. Leave your keys and an explanation of the emergency situation in the garage's drop box, if available.

Tips & Warnings
Know the number for your roadside service provider before you start out on your next trip. Some providers give you a sticker with the emergency phone number on it, which you can affix to one of your car windows.
Don't panic. Once you've made contact with your emergency service provider, know that the tow truck is on its way and that you'll soon be on your way home.
If you don't have a roadside assistance program, get one now. You never know when something may happen, and it will give you great peace of mind knowing that you are covered if you have an incident.
