How to Take a Rock Hound Vacation

Taking a rock hound vacation is a great way to add to any rock collection. Rock hounds who enjoy outdoor activities such as camping or hiking can explore many areas in America. To enjoy a worry-free vacation, rock hounds should obtain permission before collecting rocks from private lands and learn the regulations of collecting on public lands.

Instructions

    • 1

Start planning a rock hound vacation by locating mineral rich areas. The desert Southwest is a primary source for many minerals, including turquoise. Arizona has dozens of prime rock collecting sites with some having easier access than others.

    • 2

Harvest a diamond in Arkansas. The Crater of Diamonds is the only publicly accessible diamond collection site in the world. Rock hounds can keep whatever gems they find after paying the access fee. There are many other gemstones available for collecting. The park is located in Pike County Arkansas.

Travel to California for some great scenery and rock collecting. Red Bluffs, California, is a first rate Ammonite Fossil Site. Camp at the Black Rock Campground outside Redding, California, and collect from several fossil sites. Fossilized giant clams are also plentiful in the area.

Collect fossils and admire the scenery in the great fossil and gem state of Colorado. Colorado has the fantastic Dinosaur National Monument in the appropriately named Dinosaur, Colorado.
