Summer doesn't officially begin until someone shouts "Cannonball!" and soaks the whole crowd with this big splash-maker. Doesn't it bring back fond poolside memories of your youth? To learn more about making an entrance with a splash and passing on this important legacy to your children, read on.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wait for the perfect time to execute your cannonball. It could be when your wife has just gotten her hair done for that special summer wedding, or your new neighbors invite your whole family over for a dip in their swimming pool. Only you can decide when the time is right for you.

  2. Step 2

Surprise other people in the pool. The element of surprise is the most important facet of this "dive."

  3. Step 3

Limber up first and do a few practice jumps, especially if you haven't done a cannonball in 20 years. You don't want to wind up in the emergency room or on some lame bloopers show. It's best to use a diving board to get lots of height, but you'll be lucky to find one anymore. Take a couple steps off the side of the pool if the pool deck permits.

  4. Step 4

Make sure no one is in the path of your cannonball.

  5. Step 5

Take off, getting as much height and distance as you can so you don't end up doing a painful backsmacker, or even worse, a headsmacker on the pool deck.

  6. Step 6

Holler, "Cannonball!" as loudly as possible during your takeoff. This gives people a tiny grace period to move out of the way of the imminent splash. At least you can say you warned them.

  7. Step 7

Draw your legs up as high as you can with your hands clasped around your knees. Stay upright, and "become" the cannonball as it travels toward impact.

Tips & Warnings
  • Come up quickly so you can see the effect of your Big Kahuna wave. The expression on your wife's face should help you gauge the effectiveness of your cannonball, particularly if her hair is drenched.
  • Of course, use common sense and never jump or dive into a shallow pool.
  • Never swim under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It's a deadly combination.
