Blooming daffodils and bud covered trees are clear signs that winter is coming to an end and spring is upon us. For many people springtime means baseball, cookouts and fishing. But for homeowners, it also means it's time to get your house ready for warm weather. So roll up your sleeves and tackle some spring cleaning projects that will give you a healthier home.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Get rid of dust mites as they leave droppings that trigger allergies. Wash all bedding in hot water and thoroughly vacuum curtains. If you have small throw rugs in the house, wash them as well.
Step2
Flip your mattresses to help them wear more evenly. If it's more than 10 years old, consider replacing it.
Step3
Replace batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. By doing this in the spring, you will always know when they were last changed and when it's time for new ones.
Step4
Clean your chimney if you use a fireplace or wood burner. When soot and creosote build up, it can lead to chimney fires and fill the house with toxic fumes.
Step5
Vacuum window sills and clean the glass on a cloudy day. Direct sun will dry your cleaning solution quickly causing streaks. A crumpled newspaper works just as well as expensive paper towels, but wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the ink.
Step6
Check for mold as you go about your cleaning of windows, walls and especially bathroom fixtures. A discoloration or musty smell can indicate there is mold in the house. Exposure to mold can trigger allergies and can lead to respiratory illness so it should be taken care of immediately.
Step7
Organize your medicine cabinet and get rid of expired prescription medicines. Even vitamins lose their potency over time so throw them out as well if they are past their expiration date.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tackle one room at a time and clean it from top to bottom. Otherwise you may be washing items and putting them back in a dirty room which makes no sense.
  • Clean from top to bottom, especially when dusting.
