Ladybugs are well-liked insects found in areas all over the world. They are famous for contributing to the elimination of pests by eating aphids, scale insects and plant mites. Ladybugs don't build their own homes; they reside in crops, gardens and trees. You can provide housing for them by purchasing a ladybug house designed especially for these popular insects.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Look for creviced or slot openings. The house must provide protection from predators. Birds, insects like dragonflies and tree frogs are some of the predators for ladybugs. Openings also provide air circulation and light to come in.
Step2
Check the support. The house should mount on a fence or post. It needs to be up off of the ground so that predictors and rain won't come in.
Step3
Consider how the house shelters against environmental hazards. It should protect against wind and rain.
Step4
Select a house that will fit into your landscape. Place it in a garden area or near roses or other plants that attract aphids.
Step5
Choose light, bright colored houses. Light colored homes attract ladybugs.
Step6
Make sure the ladybug house has a removable roof or a door that can be opened for cleaning.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add liquid attractant to the inside of the house to attract the ladybugs inside.
  • Place the house in the sun because ladybugs are attracted to light.
  • To attract ladybugs, plant flowers that they like. These include angelica and dill.
  • Ladybugs like humidity and need water, so place a bottle cap or other small container filled with water in the ladybug house.
  • Avoid the use of pesticides if you are trying to grow your ladybug population.
