How to Buy a Longbow
A longbow is pretty much what it sounds like, a bow that is long in length. Because of this some people are intimidated by owning and shooting one because they think longer means archery is more difficult. But the rewards of owning one, especially for someone into medieval history, are great.

1
Talk to a bowmaker about what you want to use your longbow for.
-
2
Decide on a draw length for the bow and at what weight the bow will need to be for this draw length. Too much of a draw length and you may pick up bad shooting practices or not even be able to pull the bow back to shoot.
-
3
Speak with other archery fans about their preference for a longbow. Trying different bows out will probably not be possible.
-
4
Pick your materials for your bow. Depending on your bowmaker this can be all wood, wood with fiberglass, all fiberglass, or even aluminum. This can also be important depending on the style of shooting you are planning on doing.
-
5
Test out your bow once it is complete by your bowmaker to see if there are any problems or questions.

Tips & Warnings
If you are new to archery, start with a lower weight and draw length and work up so you do not get a bow above your ability. This can discourage you from shooting the bow and staying in the sport.
You can buy a longbow online through reputable stores and individual makers.
More expensive does not always equal a better quality bow.
If you plan to shoot in competition, you will probably want a bow with fiberglass parts for reinforcement. If you are going for more historical or SCA shooting you will want a bow with more wood, if not all wood, parts.
