Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Know that you have all kinds of options for enrolling in a music school or program. Most colleges and universities have music programs, and many of them are reputable or well known and some prestigious (e.g., The University of Texas, Austin, Texas and Edmonds Community College, Lynnwood, Washington).
Step2
Explore private music schools, too, like "Berklee College of Music' in Boston, Massachusetts, where many well known musicians, song writers and producers attended, such as Quincy Jones, Steve Perry of "Journey" and Kevin Eubanks of "The Tonight Show."
Step3
Understand that a superb music education is important, but also networking is essential in the music industry. As with any art field, fantastic talent and training are only part of the equation for success; without some business savvy and keen social skills, gifted musicians can go unnoticed.
Step4
Shop around and read as much as you can about various music schools. Find out about notable musicians who've attended each school. Enroll at a music school, ideally, where you fit in best musically.
Step5
Start with the top schools you're interested in to enroll in music school. Contact each to obtain an application and admission information.
Step6
Make an audition demo—either on CD or DVD. Record your best sounds. Be sure and make it clear which songs you've written, if any, before sending demos in.
Step7
Fill out applications and send them in with your demo (if requested) along with other required documents and your resume.
Step8
Know that some music schools may expect you to audition. Schedule audition time early if required. Find out if the school(s) want(s) your demo as well as an audition.
Step9
Wait for your acceptance letter(s). Choose the school best for you, your lifestyle and your future career as a professional musician. Enroll at a music school.
