How to Become a Boat Mechanic

Working on boats is fun, challenging, and they all need maintenance or repair at some point. If you like to repair boats and keep them in running condition, then becoming a boat mechanic is the job for you.

      Go to technical school. In order to become a boat mechanic you will need to attend a technical school. The programs last about two years and will give you the valuable knowledge that you need to repair and maintain boats.

      Receive scuba diving certification. There will come a time when a hull or propeller will need repair. This job will require you to put scuba gear on and get under the water. You will be a more valuable boat mechanic if you have your scuba diving certification.

      Get experience while you are attending technical school at a marina or boat yard. This will help you to become more familiar with boats and how they operate. On the job experience is the best experience. It will supplement what you learn in school.

      Look for a job vacancy. Before graduating from technical school start looking for boat mechanic positions. You do not want to wait until you graduate to start looking for a job. By looking for a job before you graduate from school you will have a better chance of finding a job faster than if you wait until after graduation.

      Submit your application once you have found the boat mechanic position that you want. Apply to more than one position. This will help increase your odds of getting a job.
