Step1
Meet general qualifications. To become a locomotive engineer you have to be at least twenty-one years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, complete locomotive engineer training, have excellent vision and hearing, and be in good physical shape. You can also attend a vocational or community college to gain locomotive knowledge.
Step2
Get experience. As a locomotive engineer you need to be familiar with how your engine works and how it's built. Therefore you will start as an apprentice to the machinist or boiler maker. As you move through the various jobs to learn about locomotives you will gain the experience to become a locomotive engineer.
Step3
Pass the locomotive examination. When you have gained the proper experience you need to study for the locomotive engineer exam. It's a difficult exam that will test your knowledge of trains, rules, regulations and operating procedures.
Step4
Keep an eye on vacancies. Every month the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board makes a list of vacancies. Frequently check the list to find an opening closest to your home. You can also contact the railroad company that you want to work for to see what positions they have available.
Step5
Apply after you have reviewed the current job openings by submitting your resume and application. After you have put in your application, periodically make a call to check the status of your application. This shows you have a strong desire for the position and will give you an edge over your competition.
