Difficulties with speech and language can be remedied with the help of a speech therapist. A speech therapist develops ways to remedy articulation problems like stuttering or cognitive language skills according to individual needs. Find a speech therapist who can work with you to cope with and overcome speech difficulties.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Ask your primary care physician for a referral to a qualified speech therapist in your area. Your doctor can locate a therapist who specializes in treatment tailored to your needs.
Step2
Call your insurance company and speak with a representative who can provide a list of speech therapists covered under your insurance. To locate a covered therapist on your own, go to the insurance company website and search by location, practice or hospital affiliation.
Step3
Check with family and friends who have used a speech therapist for a recommendation. Look in the phone book for a general listing of speech therapists in your area.
Step4
Choose a speech therapist and call the office. Ask if she is accepting new patients. Also make sure she is contracted with your insurance company, unless you are going to pay out of pocket.

Tips & Warnings

  • While researching, make a list of possible speech therapists that you might like to see. If your first choice falls through, you'll have some backup therapists to call without having to do more research.
  • Always check with your insurance company to ensure that the speech therapist you've chosen is in your network of providers. Using an in-network provider saves money.
  • If your child is in speech therapy, be proactive and help the child with the therapy. Involved parents are important for successful therapy.
  • Finding a speech therapist when your child is young is the most beneficial because younger children are easier to teach.
  • Make sure the speech therapist you've chosen is certified, has at least a Master's degree, scored well on the national certification examination and has clinical experience. Also verify that the therapist is licensed in your state.
