How to Play Word Munchers

Word Munchers hearkens us back to a simpler time, when computer screens were black and DOS was still pretty cutting edge. Used as an educational tool in classrooms all over the world, Word Munchers has remained a popular mainstay for helping kids develop hand-eye coordination and further their phonics and word association skills while having plenty of fun. Here's how to play.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the level of difficulty. Choose "beginner," "advanced," or "expert," depending on your age and skill level. Choose the Word Munchers category you'd like to start with.

    • 2

Begin playing. The first board will appear. The object is to "munch" all of the correct words based on the category. For example, if the category is "verbs," (which appears at the top of the screen), you need to use the arrow keys, mouse, or joystick to scroll your muncher over to the correct word box and then click or press the spacebar to eat all of the verbs.

    • 3

Go through the board and munch all of the correct words in the word boxes. Avoid the troggles as you move around. If you run into one, you'll lose one of your three lives. If you see a box with a frame around it, this is a "safe zone" and the troggles can't enter it. Go here if you get stuck to think about your next move without getting eaten.

    • 4

Find all of the correct answers and then you'll automatically go to the next level. Each board increases in difficulty and the troggles move more quickly. As you progress through the game, mini-missions will appear between levels. Keep going until you win the game or lose all three of your munchers, and then enter your score into the Word Munchers hall of fame.
