Building a chicken wire A-frame is a convenient and economical way in which to house chickens or even make a safe outdoor play area for a cat. With just a few simple items and general handyman knowledge, a chicken wire A-frame can be easily accomplished as a weekend project.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Select the size needed for the A-frame. Using equal lengths of wood cut each end at a 60 degree angle. This will provide an equal-sided triangle. Nail the three pieces of wood together to make a triangle. Make two triangles for the two A-frames needed for this project.
Step2
Nail gusset plates at each corner of the triangles for support using 3 nails.
Step3
Attach the bottom side supports. These will be attached to the bottom boards, called the floor plates, of the two A-frames with nails. Affix the side supports to the tops of the floor plates. The length of these boards will determine the length of the A-frame shelter. Add flooring if desired at this point by attaching more boards to the floor plates within the side supports.
Step4
Add a little extra support by attaching two more pieces of wood to the top of the A-frame on each side with nails.
Step5
Cover the A-frame with chicken wire and secure with staples.

Tips & Warnings

  • If needed, make a door with excess chicken wire and a few hinges.
  • Don't use pressure treated lumber if using the A-frame to house animals.
