How to Make a Glockenspiel

Save

A glockenspiel is a German percussion instrument that is similar to a xylophone. The difference between the two is that the glockenspiel's bars are made out of metal and the xylophone's are made out of wood (giving the glockenspiel a metallic sound). Make your own tubular glockenspiel right at home by following these simple steps. It may be hard to pronounce, but playing your homemade glockenspiel will be a piece of cake.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 feet of 1/2-inch electrical metallic tubing pipe
  • Metal pipe cutter or hacksaw
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Pen or marker
  • 2 pieces of sturdy string or 2 pieces of felt or foam rubber
  • Wooden, metal or plastic mallets
  • Measure and mark the electrical metallic tubing pipe into 8 separate lengths: 11-inches, 10 1/4-inches, 9 3/4- inches, 9 1/2-inches, 8 7/8-inches, 8 1/2-inches, 7 7/8-inches and 7 5/8-inches.

  • Use a metal pipe cutter or hacksaw to cut the 8 lengths of pipe that you have measured and marked in Step 1.

  • Put the tubes of pipe in order starting from the shortest one on the top ending with the longest piece of pipe on the bottom.

  • Tie the tubes of pipe together (leaving exactly 2 inches in between them) using a piece of string on each side and making knots around each separate pipe. Or, you can just lay the tubes 2 inches apart in the same order as mentioned in Step 3 on 2 pieces of felt or foam rubber (one piece of felt or rubber underneath each side of the pipes).

  • Take a wooden, metal or plastic mallet and tap out a beautiful melody on your new glockenspiel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use caution when handling the hacksaw to prevent injury.
