Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Car in good shape
- Public transportation - optional
- Winter gear
Step1
Make sure you car is ready for snow. This not only means making sure you have the right tires but that your car is in tip top shape. See the article on winterizing your car in the resource section. Chains on your tires are also helpful.
Step2
Check the road conditions, some will be better than others. Try to travel on main highways as these will hopefully be treated and plowed rather than the back roads which are usually the last to be cared for.
Step3
Adjust your driving to the weather. Your speed as well as the way you drive should be different in the snow than it would be in dry weather or even rain.
Step4
Watch out for other motorists. Although you may be a good driver others may have problems navigating in the snow. Be sure you pay attention to the drivers around you. Always wear your seat belt, it can save your life.
Step5
Use public transportation as an alternative to driving. You may be safer on a bus or train in a snow storm especially if you don't like driving in the snow.
Step6
Walking is another way of navigating in the snow.. If you don't have too far to go you may be better off walking. On a day where it may take 5 minutes to drive, in a snow storm it may take half an hour or more. By walking on that day you may make it in less than a half an hour.
