As businesses grow in size and young people begin their chosen careers, more people find themselves looking for a date in the workplace. Even those seasoned in their careers may meet a co-worker who they'd like to date. If you find yourself falling for a co-worker, follow these tips to successfully date in the workplace.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Check your employee handbook or internal company regulations for policies and regulations regarding dating in the workplace. Your company may have specific rules about dating a subordinate or manager, for example. Some companies require the two parties to notify administration. Depending upon the work relationship you have with your love interest, you may need to transfer positions before you can date in the workplace.
Step2
Build a positive relationship with your office crush at work before moving on to the dating stage. It is especially important to make sure you have a friendship in place before you date in the workplace since you'll likely still see the person after any break-up when you date in the workplace.
Step3
Ask your intended date out for a casual lunch as a first date. You're both already at work, and you can get to know each other in a comfortable environment with minimal pressure.
Step4
Stay professional on the job, especially after your relationship blossoms. Enjoy brief conversations and encounters, but remain focused on your work. Physical contact, kissing, romantic talk, etc., does not have a place in professional work. Save the tender moments for your off-hours.
Step5
Discuss your relationship and how it will affect your work and those around you. Decide together if and when to make your relationship public at work. Talk about your expectations with your new romance when you begin to date in the workplace.
Step6
Maintain your own interests and personal space. Seeing each other both during work hours and in the evenings and weekends can become stifling when you date in the workplace. Work together to balance your personal lives.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stay focused at work—avoid distracting yourself from your career, which will need attention even if the relationship ends.
  • Avoid sexual harassment charges by not asking again and again if your romantic advances are rejected. No really means no.
