How to Repair a Toboggan

A toboggan is a simple sled that is used to slide down snowy or icy hillsides or mountains. Since the toboggan has no runners or skis, it is relatively more simple to repair and maintain than a runnered sled. Still, enough things can go wrong with a toboggan to warrant repair, so follow these steps to learn how to tend to your broken or damaged toboggan.

1. Do an annual checkup. A broken toboggan is a dangerous thing. Broken or damaged pieces can affect other parts of the sled and end up causing a serious accident. Do an annual checkup yourself or take the toboggan to an expert to look for imperceptible breaks in the toboggan's structure.

2. Repair and replace straps and footman loops. One of the most common problems with toboggan toboggans is damaged straps and footman loops. Use a 3/16-inch bit to drill through the outside of the toboggan while holding the rivet on the inside with pliers. Replace the straps with 3/16-inch-wide flange steel rivets.

3. Replace handle latch pins. While handle latch pins have been used for years on toboggans, toboggan manufacturers have found that 3/8-inch Grade 5 bolts and Nylock nuts are safer and stronger for attaching handles to the sled. Replace the handle latch pins to prevent damage to the toboggan and injury to yourself.

4. Take care of cracks and dents. The damage caused by cracks and dents can cause stress on other parts of the toboggan's structure. On the basis of the toboggan's age and condition, decide if the cracks and dents are worth repairing. If so, take them to an expert who can fix them and restore the structural integrity that was affected by the damage.
