Step 1
Take action. Parents who suspect that their child suffers from a school bully simply can't wait for their child to broach the topic. In most cases, children won't confide in an adult, as fear and embarrassment prevent them from doing so. Your child can't handle bullying alone and requires your help, as well as the school's, to stop a school bully proactively.
-
Step 2
Teach your child self-confidence. Children who have strong social skills are less likely to become victims of bullying. Enroll him in activities that boost his self-esteem and where children with similar interests surround him.
-
Step 3
Explain to your child that reacting and fighting back will only cause the school bully to become more aggressive. Give him alternatives to fighting. Help him to role-play how he might talk to a school bully.
-
Step 4
Find out who your child's friends are. A school bully is more likely to target children who are loners. Make sure that your child has friends with whom he can sit at lunch and play with on the playground.
-
Step 5
Inform teachers, counselors, and the principal of the school bully. Keeping children safe while at school is a cumulative effort of all responsible adults.

on 12/19/2007 These so called solutions seem to be very simplistic.
Unfortunately the problem of "bullies" is not. I have to tell my son that because of the law he must attend school (and because I want him to have a proper education). But the thugs and wanna-be gang bangers are
constrained be the same laws, so now days the school-yard is much more like a prison-yard. this is a scary place to be if you are just a kid who wants to learn.
