Once the frame of your deck has been completed, the next step is to fasten the boards onto the frame. Fastening deck boards can be done in many different ways and is relatively easy to accomplish as long as you have the proper materials and set-up.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fasteners
  • Saw
  1. Step 1

Install what are known as starter boards, which will run perpendicular to your deck boards. The starter boards are what the deck boards will be nailed to, so make sure the starter boards are not too far away from each other. If properly spaced, your deck boards should always lay with both ends on top of a starter board.

  2. Step 2

Lay down your first deck board into position, and fasten it. There are a variety of different methods of fastening the boards: nails, screws, clips and special fastening tools that connect the insides of the board are all options. Depending on the ease you wish to be able to install and replace your boards will help you decide which fastener method is best for you.

  3. Step 3

Continue fastening your boards in place. The boards should meet at the ends. Two fasteners should be used at each end of each board.

  4. Step 4

Leave space between the widths of your boards so that water can drain through them. The space does not need to be large. Using the width of a nail is a good way to judge how much space you need to leave.

  5. Step 5

Cut off any boards that extend beyond the limits of the deck so that the edge is even and level with the frame. You may also round off edges to give the deck a more finished feel if you wish.

Tips & Warnings
  • The type and width of your deck boards is something you should put much thought into. The deck boards are always visible and are the main part of your deck.
  • Beware of splinters and possible injuries from a power saw or a nail gun, if you are using either of these during your deck fastening process.
