Most have the task of cleaning their desks once a year, some every two or three years. Decks can look great after they are cleaned. Using a deck sealer will protect your deck from rain, algae and mildew. But first, you have the task of picking out which sealer is best to use on your desk.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Find out the pros and cons of using different deck sealers. Ask a home improvement consultant at a home improvement store any questions you may have regarding sealers.
Step2
Choose a clear or semi-transparent stain. This will allow the grain of wood to show through.
Step3
Search for an oil-based product that is mixed with latex. This will allow for easy clean-up. The best sealers penetrate the wood to provide the most protection.
Step4
Buy a solid stain. This will make your finish look more like paint.
Step5
Find a deck sealer that will generally cover 100 to 250 square feet per gallon. Check the label of your specific product. You might need to use more sealer for older wood. Measure your deck. Buy only what you need.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy a solid stain if you want the finish to look like paint
  • Sealants will not stick to grease. Pre-treat any grease stains before application with soap and water
  • Do not use clear finishers like polyurethane or varnishes on decks.
  • Do not apply sealant if it's been raining. Wait for it to dry.
