How to Update a 1970s Bathroom

If walking into your bathroom is like stepping out into the woods, it's time to update that 1970s bathroom. Comfortable as it was at the time, it's now dated and dingy. Keeping a few basic principles in mind, like color and style, updating the style of your 1970s bathroom can be easy.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Focus on the fixtures. Begin your update by considering the sink, tub and toilet. Chances are, they all need to be replaced because of their color. It's difficult to use those 1970s colors–gold, avocado, burnt orange–in a more modern design. Consider buying white or off-white fixtures.
Step2
Close in on the cabinets. You need to decide whether to replace or repaint the vanity and any other cabinets in the bathroom. If they've really been there since the 1970s, they're probably worn and need to be replaced. Look for sturdy laminate finishes in white or warm neutrals. Add a solid material counter top.
Step3
Paint the walls. Strip off that textured wallpaper and paint the walls. Paint is easier, cheaper and more flexible. Start with a warm neutral color. If you get tired of it in a year, you can easily repaint with a different color.
Step4
Upgrade the flooring. Replace that old linoleum with ceramic tile. Choose a warm neutral color to complement your counter top.
Step5
Bring in modern colors. Once you've redone your bathroom in warm neutrals, bring in a few splashes of color. Use the window treatment, towels and bath mat to add a light touch of color to your modern, serene bathroom.
