Learn what the person is interested in. Maybe they are into home improvements. If that is the case you can get a gift certificate from Home Depot or Lowes.

Discover their hobbies. If you have someone on your list who loves crafts, a gift certificate from Michaels or AC Moore would be the perfect gift for them.

Find out if they are collectors. You may be able to get a gift certificate from Disney or another store that specializes in the item that they collect.

Check out their favorite restaurant. Most restaurants offer gift certificates especially at holiday time. This can be a perfect gift for two, such as for an anniversary, but can also be used for a family night out.

Know where they would like to take a vacation. You can then get a gift certificate from a travel agent (or make your own arrangements) to set up a trip that includes travel (car rental, airline tickets, etc), hotels and sightseeing.

Get a gift certificate to a movie or Broadway show. If they have been mentioning a movie or show that they would really like to see you can set up a night of entertainment for them that is open ended so they can go when they are able to get out.
