The surgeon's knot is a favorite knot of fishermen, as it comes in useful when tying two pieces of string or line together when one has become too short. Another variation of the knot is a surgeon's loop, which can be used when making a boat fast to a mooring or dock.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lay two pieces of string or line together.

  2. Step 2

    Make a loop.

  3. Step 3

Draw one end of the strings through the loop. Pass the same end through the loop a second time.

  4. Step 4

Pull on either end of the string until it's tight.

  5. Step 5

    Form a figure-eight knot.

  6. Step 6

Wet the knot to help keep it secure.

  7. Step 7

Create a loop at one end of the knot by folding over one end of the rope.

  8. Step 8

Pass the folded end through a loop. Pass the folded end through the loop a second time.

  9. Step 9

Gently pull the loop and the other end of the knot until the knot is tight.

  10. Step 10

Trim off the excess rope when you are done tying the knot.
