Step 1
Consider the area. Space is a big factor when deciding on either a laptop or desktop. If you have a small workspace, keep in mind that a laptop has a rather large footprint and takes up more room then just a keyboard, mouse and monitor, especially when compared to today's flat screen monitors.
-
Step 2
Look at where you use a computer most often. If you need to take your computer to class, or on the road then of course a laptop is the best choice. Keep in mind that you might have to connect and disconnect all peripherals each time you take your laptop with you. If this might be a problem, consider a docking station.

Step 3
Give serious thought to your comfort. Desktop systems are easier to work at when you spend long hours on the computer. A laptop keyboard can be hard on your hands and posture. A desktop system is easier on your eyes, arms, back and hands simply because of positioning and the ergonomic design of most keyboards, mice and monitors.

Step 4
Calculate your finances. Cost is not as much of a consideration as it used to be, but laptop computers are still more expensive then desktops especially if you are planning to buy a mouse, extended keyboard, docking station and second monitor. You need most of these things if you are going to use the laptop for extended periods of time.
