Step 1
Put your garbage out for pick up in the mornings. Raccoons are nocturnal and will get into garbage cans at night. By removing the garbage from the area, you eliminate the problem all together.
-
Step 2
Keep it clean. If you must leave your garbage out overnight, make sure it is enclosed and not overflowing or easily accessible. Raccoons will smell messy garbage cans and come running.
-
Step 3
Make an enclosure. By building a simple wooden enclosure to store your garbage you will greatly decrease the chances of raccoons getting into your garbage and making a mess. Consider using a latch to keep the enclosure closed and not readily accessible by any nocturnal visitors.
-
Step 4
Use a garbage can with a tight, screw on lid. Lids that screw or twist on and off are difficult for raccoons to manipulate. You can also use a bungee cord to strap down the lid. Keep your garbage in a tall, plastic garbage can to further decrease the odds of raccoons gaining access.
