Bellhops work in the guest services department of large hotels. They greet guests, carry luggage to their room and assist the hotel guests with their needs and requests. A job as a bellhop is perfect for someone who enjoys meeting people and can stand and walk for hours at a time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get at least a high school diploma. Most hotels hire bellhops from job applications or from within the hotel. While graduating from a general trade school or hotel/motel trade school is a plus for other types of hotel jobs, it may over qualify you for a bellhop job.

  2. Step 2

Apply in the human resources department of a large hotel chain like Hilton, Sheraton or Omni. Fill out an application in person at the hotel where you'd like to work. A more personal application approach is best for service jobs. Since you'll be working with the public, your physical appearance and personality will be important to your prospective employer.

  3. Step 3

Stay in shape. Bellhops need to carry luggage for arriving and departing guests, run errands and check on guest room temperatures and conditions. Being in good physical condition will help you do your job better and not collapse at the end of your shift.

  4. Step 4

Consider becoming a bell captain if you secure a bellhop job at a large hotel. A bell captain oversees the scheduling and work load for the bellhops and porters.

  5. Step 5

Smile and be cooperative and friendly during the interview process. Do the same during your first few days on the job, and get used to it. The bellhop is usually the first person a hotel guest sees after they've arrived at the hotel, so always leave a good impression.

Tips & Warnings
  • Porters usually work outdoors at large hotels.
