If you're interested in competition springboard diving and have already mastered the basic front and back dives, it's time to try something a little more difficult. A half gainer is a forward facing dive in which the diver, once in the air, does a back half somersault and lands head first in the water. With confidence and practice, diving a half gainer will be a piece of cake.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Regulation pool with adequate diving area
  • 1-meter diving board
  • Diving coach or another responsible person to spot you
  • Enough diving experience to complete a basic forward and back dive without incident
  1. Step 1

Make your approach as if you were doing a forward dive.

  2. Step 2

Propel yourself up and forward, after one bounce.

  3. Step 3

Look back towards the water, once you are in the air. Your body will follow your head, doing a half flip in the air.

  4. Step 4

Enter the water arms outstretched, hands locked, fingers first, toes pointed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Visualize looking back towards the water before doing it.
  • Make sure you take a good forward bounce before looking back into your half gainer. It is very important to clear the diving board.
  • Don't attempt this dive alone. If by some chance you are injured, your life may depend upon a quick rescue.
