How to Fish for Barracuda

The long teeth of the barracuda make this a frightening fish for some divers. Barracuda are known to be curious, following swimmers and occasionally taking a bite. But, the barracuda is also a game fish. Fishing for a barracuda is a challenge, but the result of catching such enormous game is an unforgettable fishing trip.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an area in which barracudas are known to swim. Go to the East Coast or the Gulf Coast if possible, as some of the largest barracuda species can be found there.

    • 2

Make a disturbance in the water, which will draw curious barracuda to your location. Cast into the water immediately after creating the disturbance.

    • 3

Use a lure with the brightest color possible, which barracuda are known to prefer. Find a bright red or neon-colored lure if available. Make sure the lure is sturdy to avoid being chewed up by the fish's needle-like teeth. Choose a heavy duty plastic or a thick wood lure.

    • 4

Retrieve the line quickly in order to get noticed by barracuda. Keep up jerky movements while fishing, but keep them erratic and unexpected to excite the barracuda and entice him to strike.

    • 5

Prepare for a fight. Keep a steady hand, and fight to bring in your catch. Barracudas, particularly the largest varieties, are notoriously strong fighters. Use a net to bring in the larger ones.

    • 6

Release your catch back to the ocean, or keep it for a taxidermist to mount.
