An anemometer allows you to monitor wind speed. Once assembled you can install it at your home, school, or office. The anemometer can be mounted on a wood post, metal pipe or the post of a television antenna.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Anemometer base
  • 2 U-bolts
  • 4 Flat washers (to fit U-Bolts)
  • 4 Hex nuts (to fit U-Bolts)
  • Wrench
  • Stainless steel hose clamps (optional)

    Selecting a Location

  1. Step 1

Find a location where wind flow will not be obstructed by tall buildings or trees.

  2. Step 2

An anemometer should have at least 4 feet of clearance above the roof line. You can achieve this height by mounting the anemometer on a television antenna mast, a wooden post or a metal pipe.

  3. Step 3

Test your anemometer according to the instructions in the handbook before mounting it.

  4. Mounting the Base on a Wooden Post

  5. Step 1

Position the anemometer base flat against the post.

  6. Step 2

Use a pencil to mark the base with the locations of the holes in the base.

  7. Step 3

Drill holes through the pencil marks.

  8. Step 4

Screw the lag screws through the base into the wood.

  9. Step 5

Place the anemometer arm into the base according to the anemometer's instructions, if necessary.

  10. Mounting the Base to a Metal Pipe or Antenna Post

  11. Step 1

Position the anemometer base as flat as possible against the pipe or post.

  12. Step 2

Push the 2 U-bolts through the back of the anemometer base, so they wrap around the metal pipe.

  13. Step 3

Put a washer and a hex nut over the ends of the bolts.

  14. Step 4

Tighten the hex nuts with a wrench.

  15. Step 5

Place the anemometer arm into the base according to the anemometer's instructions, if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the U-bolts aren't big enough to fit around the metal pipe, place the anemometer base against the pipe and wrap stainless steel hose clamps around the base and the pipe. Tighten the clamps in place with a screwdriver.
  • Hardware sizes can vary. Most anemometers will come with mounting kits, so use whatever hardware is in the kit.
  • Make sure your antenna or post is properly grounded.
  • Anemometers are fragile and should be treated with care. When installing one be sure it is secure but do not over-tighten any of the screws. Doing so could damage the anemometer.
