Some women have their babies naturally with no complications, while others must have cesareans for medical reasons. If you're pregnant and you want a natural childbirth, there are some steps that you can take to help reduce the chances of having a cesarean.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Educate yourself about pregnancy, labor and childbirth. Attend birthing classes or join a group for expectant mothers. The more educated you are, the more prepared and relaxed you will be. Stress and fear can make labor and delivery more difficult--you want the process to go as smoothly and naturally as possible.

  2. Step 2

Take care of yourself throughout your pregnancy. Follow your doctor's advice. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and avoid stress as much as possible.

  3. Step 3

Consider a number of health care providers and ask them how they feel about cesareans. Find out how they'll handle different situations in the delivery room. Out of all the babies they've delivered, how many were delivered by cesarean? When mothers prefer natural childbirth, do they have the skills or experience to use other methods to encourage vaginal childbirth?

  4. Step 4

Sit down with the health care provider you choose and have a thorough discussion about your birthing process. Express your desire for a natural childbirth. Be sure to familiarize yourself with how the doctor will proceed under every set of circumstances.

  5. Step 5

Prepare your partner. You'll need a birthing partner who can stay calm and relaxed, as well as help you stay relaxed, in all situations.
