How to Replace a Radiator With a Convector

Anyone living with large, steaming hot radiators in their home will eventually think of replacing them with something smaller and cooler. A simple solution is to replace your radiator with a smaller, less sizable convector. Here are the steps to replace that clunky radiator with a new convector.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Buddy
  • Pipe wrenches
  • Towel
  • Pipe and fittings
  • Convector baseboard
  1. Step 1

Measure the room you need to heat. This will determine how much convector heating you will need to replace the existing radiator to be sure you'll have adequate heating for the size of the room.

  2. Step 2

Drain the water out of the boiler system. You should find a drainage valve at the lowest point on the system. Open this valve and let the water drain out. You also may need to open up the valve on the radiator.

  3. Step 3

Remove the radiator. Take your appropriately-sized pipe wrench and open up the radiator connectors. Keep in mind there will still be a bit of water in the radiator, and it's most likely got rust or other sediment in it, so keep some towels handy. Actually moving the radiator out of the house will require some help, so ask a buddy to help you lift it.

  4. Step 4

Replace the old plumbing with new plumbing. Be sure to measure carefully so your pipe comes through the floor at the right spot.

  5. Step 5

Attach your new baseboard convector to the pipe fittings. Pressure-test the system for leaks by filling it again with water.
