Step 1
Snap photographs in sunlight or natural light when possible. Whether you are shooting photos outdoors or in a room buoyed by natural light through a window, this is the best choice for capturing most artwork.
-
Step 2
Use the white balance settings on your digital camera for some photos. Look at your instruction book and memorize the settings before you shoot. Concentrate on color composition of the art, the background of the room and the lighting before setting the white balance.
-
Step 3
Set up a neutral or grey background when photographing 3-D artwork. Flashy or metallic backgrounds won't suit the piece and will end up obstructing the view. Always use strong lighting to photograph 3-D art.
-
Step 4
Light from the sides if you must photograph art encased under glass. Photograph the object straight-on with the entire camera except for the lenses hidden under a soft material such as a piece of cloth.
-
Step 5
Make sure paintings are straight before shooting them. Always use a tripod with a self timer and avoid touching it when it shoots.
-
Step 6
Shed the proper amount of light on your artwork, no more, no less. Check your camera's LCD meter and judge accordingly. Too much light eliminates shadows in photos that show off texture and intensity in artwork.
