You must memorize the notes on the bass and treble clefs in order to read music. The bass clef is below the treble clef in the grand staff, which joins two five-lined, four-spaced staffs together. The bass clef is usually played with the left hand, on a keyboard, and can be easily memorized by creating your own bass clef visual.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pencil
  • Paper
  1. Step 1

Create five straight horizontal lines, one above the other, making a staff.

  2. Step 2

Write a bass clef on the left side of the staff. A bass clef indicates what notes are associated with the lines and spaces on the staff.

  3. Step 3

Draw a dot on each line of the staff.

  4. Step 4

Write "G" below the first dot, "B" below the second dot, "D" below the third dot, "F" below the fourth dot and "A" below the fifth dot. These are the note names for the lines on the bass clef.

  5. Step 5

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 and draw a dot in each space of the staff, starting with the space above the first line.

  6. Step 6

Place an "A" below the first dot, "C" below the second dot, "E" below the third dot and "G" below the fourth dot. These are the note names for the spaces on the bass clef.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember the lines of the bass clef by with this phrase: Good Birds Don't Fly Away.
